Three books. Book one the foe is Grendel. Book two it's Grendel's mother (Not sure on that, it might be the father). Book three is a sort of dragon.

Of course Beowulf battles Grendel, but metaphorically he battles himself, and the spreading of monotheism into a culture rich in polytheism. Grendel represents the old world, and the slaying of Grendel is seen as killing off the old world.

Beowulf battles Grendel and Grendel's mother, both of whom are demons. He also later battles a dragon, but dies from wounds he receives in that battle.
