1) Pitchers throwing on three days rest do not have a great track record over the past 10-15 seasons.
2) Beckett has a sore shoulder, and it's likely he would have either injured it or had a short stint last night.
3) Last night was not a must-win game. If Beckett had pitched last night and lost, then what? You've got Francona being questioned as to why he didn't save him for a "real" must-win game like Game 5.
4) Sox fans have had confidence in Wakefield all season long. Why the sudden turning on him?

first off, it was not a must win game.
second, it was not a mistake to start Wakefield. he was a 17 game winner in the regular season, and he was lights out till the fifth inning. he gave the sox what i was expecting, a couple of innings, and the sox were only down by 3 when he left. then Delcarman comes in, chokes, and gives up a three run homer.
plus, if Francona starts Beckett on short rest and a sore back and he loses, red sox nation would be calling for Franconas head. But now the sox have their ace on the mound in a must win game, and if he wins, the sox go back to fenway were they have a good chance to win.
i think it was the right choice, and so doesn't all the red sox fans i know.
and also, Blake hit a solo home run at the beginning of the fifth inning. and if Francona does get fired the sox will just get a great manager that the Yankees are going to stupidly fire, Joe Torre.

No, I have to heartily disagree. Why change the norm for the playoffs? First, Beckett only started 30 games, which indicates that he is used to getting proper rest. Second, if Wakefield WINS, they go even with Beckett to go, which shifts the momentum back to the Sox and has a high likelihood of sending them home with a 3-2 lead. If anything, Francona panicked and pulled Wakefield too soon.
Remember 2004? Don't you think the Sox at least have a CHANCE at coming back? If Beckett wins Thursday, The Series is just about even considering it will end at Fenway.

I still think Terry did the right thing. Beckett's arm was tight after game 1. Regardless of the outcome of this series Terry is a great manager. Don't blame him because he's done a great job this season.
BTW: Blake hit a 1 run homer. You sir are the dummy.

Josh "tightness in the shoulder" beckett will start gave 5.
He only went 5 innings the other nite because of some tightness in the shoulder. Maybe they just made that up. Wakefield was doing well until the 5th inning, then the tribe exploded and exposed his 68mph pitches for all they were worth.
The real guy that should be fired is DiceK. He really sucked and is over paid.

I heard on ESPN that Beckett had an issue with his back and he couldn't have gone in Game 4. Or maybe that is Boston's take to make up for the Francona decision. When asked if he could pitch last night, Beckett had no comment.

i might want to really have Beckett totally rested than having all started him very last evening. look at it this way, say Beckett had pitched very last evening and lost. might want to you opt for the finished season to relax on the shoulders of Wakefield? that would were a worse situation. ignore the payroll. That has no longer something to do with something once the gamers step on the container. so some distance as Francona is in contact, the in basic terms reason he's lasted this lengthy in Boston is with the aid of skills on the crew, no longer because of his managerial skills.

Did you watch the game? No, Wake pitched good, and he didn't give up the 3 run bomb. He possibly could have pitched out of that, but he was pulled, so what's done is done. They did come back four games in 04' so it ain't over.
