When I run disk clean up right when it starts to run after I've selected all the files to clean such as temp files, I get a norton antivirus alert saying I have a downloader virus and then the disk cleanup pretty much stalls and wont continue its progress.

Try downloading a program call "Disk Cleaner" from http://www.diskcleaner.nl/ It works better and faster than the regular disk cleanup.

Go to http://www.atribune.org -> Click on Downloads -> Download ATF-Cleaner 3, this will clean all your temp files, cache files, recycle bin files and system clutter.
As far as the virus goes, scan your PC and have it removed. If Norton won't get the job done, install AVG and/or Spybot Search & Destroy and continuously scan your PC for problems.

right click on your norton virus icon and select disable then run your disk clean up.
Thats one of the reaasons i dont use Norton.

try ccleaner. it's the best one around. and use AVG free. norton's a real piece of S***
