Chances are a pillow won't catch on fire, it may get hot, but I don't think it will catch on fire. What you could do is use a wooden shelf that is about 2 feet wide, or use a tv tray table. Maybe you can use a box or phone book also.
You may look into getting a laptop cooler, they cost about $20 and have fans that keep the bottom of your laptop cool.

Even though your laptop gets uncomfortably warm, it will not produce the heat to cause a pillow to catch fire. (Eg;mitts for an oven are made of cotton)It will be fine! Just be sure to use a plain pillow without adornments.Good Luck

actually, putting a laptop on a lap even though that's the purpose of it is not quite a good idea.
there are some reported cases of laptops' batteries exploding. some are caused while on charge, the others are just simply overheating or factory's fault. so, it would be better to put your laptop above a desk to secure you (and your balls) from and explosions and overheating. it might even help to correct your posture and increase your work speed.
but if you insist, i would suggest putting the laptop's case or putting a book underneath.

you buy a laptop pad which dissipates the heat. , or maybe a wooden tray. Don't use anything else like a pillow or a towel as these will smother the airvents and cause your laptop to overheat

Use anything. A magazine or book. A towel or something would work too. Or just put the laptop on a table when it gets too hot.
You can also buy something made especially for that at the electronics store.

You could use a dinner plate turned face down, or a small rack from your kitchen that you use for cooling cakes and holding hot pans. That will protect your legs and let air get to the laptop for cooling.

It's not recommended that you put the laptop in your lap ... but if you have to .. try using one of the cooling pads that can be fond at computer shops.

TV tray, or anything with a hard surface. Don't use something soft, unless it's under the tray, because you want air to circulate under the laptop ... which it can't if it's being smothered by any kind of fabric.
