the earth's magnetic field is like one giant magnet. Only, a very weak one!.
The magnetic field is enough to influence free spinning magnets, with no other strong magnetic forces nearby to align to its axis, which is a roughly north-south position. This principle is used in the compass, and by knowing which direction is north, people can know which direction to navigate in.
However today the compass is replaced by GPS..
