This can be used to find or form right angles. Or it can be used to find measurements when you know you are delaing with a right angle.

In a right triangle, the the square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the two legs.

It is used in hundreds of ways. One example is finding the distance between two points (x1,y1) and (x2,y2). The distance,d, between the two points is the hypotenuse of a right triangle while (x2-x1) and (y2-y1) are the two legs. So
d =sqrt((x2-x1)^2 +(y2-y1)^2).

A triangle with sides 3,4, and 5 is a right triangle because 5^2 = 3^2+4^2. Carpenters use this to make sure they have square corners when building a home.

Ther are many proofs of the Pythagorean Theorem dating back thosands of years. The most famous is the proof by Euclid abour 2200 years ago.
