The best age is never. When you've saved enough to live comfortably for the rest of your life, you might consider starting a new career just for the fun of it. At that point you can ignore the salary issues and just enjoy the experience. Stopping all useful and productive activity at any age is a recipe for a quick death. Unless playing golf and drinking beer on the couch is your idea of a great way to end your days, start thinking about an endeavor for retirement. People who continue working (at whatever pace suits them), live longer and say they are happier. You might be too.

This depends on what you do? For example I own my own business and it is my life. I love what I do. I will never sell it or retire. If you have the money to retire and live the kind of life you are accustomed to then you can retire at any age you like. Just make sure you are ready financially. it would suck to be broke at 70 and cant afford your meds because you retired to early.

Based on my financial calculations, I should be able to retire from work right around 2 years after I am dead....... give or take a month.

I don't feel that there is any set age. I feel that it's when you're financially able to. I'll probably be working till I'm 65 though.
