Considering our history, prohibition failed. Considering in countries where Alcohol is prohibited, the rate of alcoholism is higher than non prohibited countries. I would recommend free choice. That is a non government issue. You have the right to be a moron in this country, whether it alcohol, drugs, speeding, or being Paris Hilton.

Definately an alcohol friendly society. There is nothing wrong with alcohol in moderation. Just because you know people who have abused it does not make it the most destructive drug known to mankind. Obviously, you have never experienced people on crack at their worst. It is MUCH more destructive than alcohol.

Alcoholic friendly society
Since in moderation alcohol consumption is no more harmful that eating fatty foods, both can kill you given time.
There is also the memory of the Prohibition era in the US, give organized crime a reason for being and it will exploit it.
"considering it is the most destructive drug known to mankind"
That's a very bold statement, can you back it up?

I would like a society that didn't worry about what everyone else is doing and focus on themselves and their issues.
Those who usually cannot control themselves love to control others it seems - this is just an observation and not a comment about the question.
PS - I respect what you are saying. I get the feeling you've been hurt by someone who is an alcoholic, and I am sorry for that. That's why I hope you don't take offense to my answer.

In Vino Veritas. Alcohol is a drug but all it does is exacerbate pre-existing human tendancies (and eat up your liver, but only after a long, long time). If those tendancies are destructive then perhaps we should worry less about the "drug" that brought them to the surface and more about the underlying issues.
Cheers!

No I prefer a free society where people can make their own decisions and can work out their own lives the way they want to.

What ? And make Teddy Kennedy RICHER ? His family owns Seagrams, and the Kennedys got thier cash from running booze in Prhibition days. Oh, you will also create even bigger gangs from the illegal alcohol trade.
You don't want a drink, don't have one. Keep yer mitts off my Jack Daniels.

Alcohol, when used in moderation, is not dangerous. That cannot be said about many other drugs (And at least one non-drug I can think of). It would be wrong to prohibit it based simply on what happens when it is misused. That would be like saying that since automobiles kill more Americans than anything else, they should be banned.
