I work in a call center with 2,000+ people answering phones where it is not uncommon for lots of turnover..

My co-worker gets the forms as they are terminated and has specially brought in a bell from home to ring when they are fired..

I don't know what to think of this & why would my co-worker do something like this?

He takes great pride in ringing the bell & sometimes the bell is rung daily upwards of 10 times.

He's SO proud that he mentioned in a meeting with upper management, and now they want him to keep very detailed records of all the firings!!!

How unfair is it that this psychotic behavior gets him in good with the bosses?

That's the thing about ethics -- they vary.

Different sets of ethical rules may conflict -- and what is ethical and praiseworthy under one set of ethical rules may be prohibited under a different set.

More than likely he feels the need to make others feel bad because of his own self-loathing. Best thing to do is ignore him or her. As far as the bosses condoning this behavior, you should ask yourself, "Are these the kind of people I want to work for/with?" If the answer is no, make sure to ring the bell on your way out so he/she doesn;t ahve the pleasure of doing it. Or, just take the bell and hide it.

I find it hard to believe that people who work in a call center (if its what I think it is, telemarketing...) would have any concerns about ethics. I don't mean you, by the way... Your co-worker sounds like a genuine jackass and if upper management condones this practice then they're jackasses too. They obviously don't value their employees or give a hoot about morale at their company. Find another job, as soon as possible....

He is not so much unethical as just an ******.

Did the upper management not already keep records of the firings?
