Butterfly weed is found in dryish, weedy fields, but likes decent soil and good sunlight.

I believe your combining the names of two different plants . One ( milkweed ) is a plant that grows to about three feet tall . It has lavender colored flowers that turn into seed pods that resemble fish when the tough green shell is removed.
The other is butterfly weed ( ascladedia tuberosa ) . It's a much shorter plant with beautiful orange flowers .
Both are members of the same asclapedia ( not sure of spelling ) family . Both have a milky sap . Both grow in neglected meadows in the North-East .

I live in southern Illinois, here butterfly milkweed are common plant. It is found in fields, edges, road sides and parks. It survives on whatever nutrients are common in clay soils given proper moisture.
