its up or down of the earth

2007-10-17 05:49:17 · answer #1 · answered by Mommiedearest 7 · 0 3

Latitude and Longitude are used to describe a location on Earth.

Longitude is the east-west geographic coordinate measurement measured from the Prime Meridian.

Latitude gives the location of a place on Earth north or south of the equator.

To remember which is which...

Latitude is the measurement running horizontally around the Earth (parallel to the equator)... when you say the word "latitude," your mouth widens to the sides.

Longitude is the measure ment running up and down the Earth (parallel to the Prime Meridian)... when you sat the word "longitude," your mouth opens up tall-wise.

Please ignore the silly people who will not help with your homework. This forum should be just the thing for that purpose. They probably don't know the answer themselves.

Look at a globe or good map of the Earth then the following will make sense.

Latitude lines are those that run across the globe as hoops or on a map from east to west. They are parallel to each other so the hoops get smaller as you approach either pole.

Longitude lines run from pole to pole. They appear to be parallel on a flat map but like orange segments when you look at them drawn on a globe.

Latitude lines start at 0 degrees at the equator and are counted upwards to 90 degrees at each pole. Hence you may have a latitude of 20 degrees North and it's counterpart at 20 degrees South.

Longitude lines start at 0 degrees on the line which passes through Greenwich (the suburb of London, not the USA version). This is often known as the Prime Meridian. Longitude lines are numbered sequentially outwards East and West until they meet at the 180 degree line which runs roughly down the middle of the Pacific Ocean. This is known as the International Date Line. Thus you can have a Longitude line at (say) 20 degrees East and one at 20 degrees West.

By using the notation x degrees North and y degrees East you can pinpoint any location on the surface of the Earth.

It's not possible to sleep through ALL your geography lessons! Believe me. Long - top to bottom, that's longitude; so latitude is around.
We're talking about the Earth. Pole to Pole (Arctic to Antarctic - North-South) longitude. East -West - latitude.

Lines of longitude are lines on a map of the world than run from pole to pole There are 360 in all consisting of 179 west and 179 east with zero at Greenwich and 180 in the Pacific.
Latitude are lines that run parallel to the Equator with the Equator as zero

What is latitude?

Equator
We can imagine the Earth as a sphere, with an axis around which it spins. The ends of the axis are the North and South Poles. The Equator is a line around the earth, an equal distance from both poles. The Equator is also the latitude line given the value of 0 degrees. This means it is the starting point for measuring latitude. Latitude values indicate the angular distance between the Equator and points north or south of it on the surface of the Earth.

A line connecting all the points with the same latitude value is called a line of latitude. This term is usually used to refer to the lines that represent values in whole degrees. All lines of latitude are parallel to the Equator, and they are sometimes also referred to as parallels. Parallels are equally spaced. There are 90 degrees of latitude going north from the Equator, and the North Pole is at 90 degrees N. There are 90 degrees to the south of the Equator, and the South Pole is at 90 degrees S. When the directional designators are omitted, northern latitudes are given positive values and southern latitudes are given negative values.

What is longitude?

Prime Meridian
Lines of longitude, called meridians, run perpendicular to lines of latitude, and all pass through both poles. Each longitude line is part of a great circle. There is no obvious 0-degree point for longitude, as there is for latitude. Throughout history many different starting points have been used to measure longitude. By international agreement, the meridian line through Greenwich, England, is currently given the value of 0 degrees of longitude; this meridian is referred to as the Prime Meridian. Longitude values are indicate the angular distance between the Prime Meridian and points east or west of it on the surface of the Earth.

The Earth is divided equally into 360 degrees of longitude. There are 180 degrees of longitude to the east of the Prime Meridian; when the directional designator is omitted these longitudes are given positive values. There are also 180 degrees of longitude to the west of the Prime Meridian; when the directional designator is omitted these longitudes are given negative values. The 180-degree longitude line is opposite the Prime Meridian on the globe, and is the same going either east or west.

A way of dividing th eplanet up so that locations on the earths surface can be located by a reference to longtitude and latitude.

Latitude is is measured from the equator. If you were able to draw a line from the centre of the earth to where you are, and then draw a line from the centre of the earth to the equator at a point directly north or south of you, then measure the angle between the two lines, you will get the latitude in degrees from the equator.
90 degrees north of the equator is the north pole.
90 degrees south of the equator is the south pole.
For precise measurements the angle is measured in degrees, minutes and seconds; a minute being 1/60 of a degree and a second being 1/3600 of a degree.

Longtitude is also measured in degrees, measuring the angle east or west of a datum, which is the zero degree line running from the north pole to the south pole through Greenwich, London, (also called the prime meridian).
So if you were to draw a line from the centre of the earth to where you are standing on the earth, then draw a line from the centre of the earth to the prime meridian, dissecting it at a point directly east or west of you and then measure the angle, you will get the longtitude angle.

Latitude --imaginary line around Earth: an imaginary line joining points on Earth's surface that are all of equal distance north or south of the equator

Longitude --angular distance from prime meridian: the angular distance east or west of the prime meridian that stretches from the North Pole to the South Pole and passes through Greenwich, England.

Lat + Long allows you to define a location on the planet.

For example, just enter the lat/long in Google maps and you can see where you are.

Click the link below for 36.0North, 96.0West which is near Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA. Now try changing the numbers and you will learn a lot about latitude and longitude.

[Some people on YA need to give you some LATITUDE. You are learning when you are using the tools on the Internet. I hope this practical tool helps you learn.]

its the method used in navigational purposes whereby captains can plot there position ona chart latitude starts at 0at the equatorand increases north or south hence 1 dgr.n or 1 dgr.s and so on.longtitude starts at greenich and increases east or west in similar fashion ..e.g. a ship in the north sea can be 56deg.n and 17deg east and where the two lines meet would be his position
