Not necessarily your two favorite tracks, though it does often work out that way, but for someone who has never heard that band that you would like to introduce to their music. If it is different, which tracks are your favorites?

I know it can depend on the audience (I know it would quite possibly effect my answer), but just go with your general listener.

I went with two tracks because that's usually my initial test for a band. I figure if two tracks hand picked by a fan won't at least get me intrigued to hear more than I probably won't be into it.

Thanks.

Thanks a lot for the responses. I actually picked up a couple of the recommended tracks from some of the groups I hadn't heard yet. Sorry, I couldn't respond during the day yesterday. By the time I had a chance to respond there were a lot of answers and well... sorry I didn't reply sooner.

Lovenrckts - great stuff. I had actually lost the Jesus and Mary Chain record I had a few years ago and ended up grabbing those tracks. I almost forgot how cool those guys were. It also sparked me getting a record that I wanted and forgot about (not sure where the association came from but it was awesome) great tracks. Unfortunately, an old roommate of mine killed AFI for me through massive overplaying. Still bugs me.

Hi Sookie, thanks for the Deftones recommendations. Like I said, wanting to give them a listen was why I asked this question. Unfortunately, I don't think they're my cup of tea, but they are definately very good at what they do. I appreciate a certain cinematic quality to it.

I'm glad I gave them a shot. Thanks.

Hi JMike, I grabbed the Wildhearts tracks and I liked TV Tan in particular a lot. Unfortunately, I grabbed tracks from a live album I suspect and I want to pick up the album versions. Really good songs.

Rukrym - I have Tak... but I haven't listened to it in quite a while, I like Hoppipola a lot though. Great tune. I tried to get the other one, but I couldn't find it at the iTunes store.

stew Pedastol - I didn't get around to it yesterday, but I've been meaning to check out some Ben Harper. Thanks for the advice.

Hi Buzzkill, I got the Spoon tracks and they are totally good. Kicking Giant as well (I got two of their songs kind of randomly). I really like the song Alien I.D.

That pretty much makes up the ones I bought yesterday. I was really pleasantly suprised by the choices that were made with some of the groups I already like. Mach Penn picked the same two for Radiohead that I would have. Hope it was fun to think about.

Thanks!

Yikes! Well, I'm gonna need to list a few bands (which I can handle) but only 2 tracks...that's the tough part.

Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - "Bellbottoms", "Rachel" (the song that started it all).

Built to Spill - "I Would Hurt A Fly", "Car"

Spoon - "Everything Hits at Once", "Jonathan Fisk"

Modest Mouse - "Polar Opposites", "Exit Does Not Exist"

Blonde Redhead - "Jewel", "A Cure"

And that's barely scratching the surface : )

That's interesting because afriend recently decided he wanted to get into the music I listened to and aske for a mix CD or two with 4 or 5 songs by each artist. So I've had a similar situation but with a little more wiggle room, and I did find it odd that many times I didn't have my favorite song in any of the 9 CDs (I couldn't possibly do any less!).

So, for Wire, a particularly hard band to nail down in less than 5 or 6 songs, I'd go with
-"I Am The Fly" one of my favorite of their post-punkier stuff.
-"12 X U" Quite simply one of THE classic punk songs.

Then I'd jump to the Rezillos and do
-"(My Baby Does) Good Sculptures" because it's one of my favorites and really shows their quarky side.
-"Somebody's Gonna Get Their Head Kicked In Tonight" because it really shows just how hard rocking and chaotic they could be. Anothe classic.

Snce my favorite bands are all pretty much known to the masses anyway, I'll go for a few that aren't so easily recognizable:

The Wildhearts: "TV Tan" and "Greetings from Shitsville"

Gemini Five: "Babylon Rockets" and "Black Anthem" (which oddly enough, are the same two songs they showcase on their website... it worked for me)

Hardcore Superstar: "We Don't Celebrate Sundays" and "Kick On the Upper Class"

NP: "Miss Amanda Jones" - The Rolling Stones

Incubus

Actually, it depends on what the person I'm trying to get into it likes. So......

Metal- "A Certain Shade Of Green"
Alternative- Priceless
R&B- Are You In
Rap- Battlestar Scratchlica
Pop- Drive
Any genre(it's a really addictive and relaxing song)- Aqueous Transmission

I'm gonna go with Sigur Ros. It's actually pretty hard to pick just two, but if I had to choose, I'd probably go with

"Hoppipola" and
"Svefn-G-Englar"

Whether these are my two favourite tracks by them I can't really decide, but I'd definitely say that if someone didn't like these, then they probably wouldn't like the band.

Great question by the way, hopefully I'll get a few new bands out of it.

I'm going to dip further down the rankings. I can't keep talking about NIN or Rob Zombie anymore. :)

AFI - 1. Third Season 2. A Story at Three

Jesus & Mary Chain - 1. Sidewalking 2. Sugar Ray
