A House vote to label the century-old deaths of Armenians as genocide was in jeopardy Tuesday after several Democrats withdrew their support and sounded alarms it could cripple U.S. relations with Turkey.

The loss of support is a major setback to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other Democratic leaders on Capitol Hill, who have fiercely defended the resolution to Republicans and the Bush administration as a moral imperative in condemning the World War I-era killings of up to 1.5 million Armenians by Ottoman Turks.

President Bush called Pelosi on Tuesday to ask her not to call for a House vote on the resolution.

"The president and the speaker exchanged candid views on the subject and the speaker explained the strong bipartisan support in the House for the resolution," Pelosi spokesman Nadeam Elshami said, noting that Bush initiated the phone call.

The nation believes the entire govt is stupid. Look at the low ratings for both Bush and Congress. If this is what Pelosi is currently worrying about she is a moron. Actually, the democratic leaderhip is not very smart at all (neither is the GOP leadership). Smart people do not run for office. We elect (and re elect) fools who are bought and paid for by big business to do their bidding in Washington. The People of the USA are not being represented fairly. It is time to start over. DO NOT RE ELECT ANY CURRENT MEMBERS OF CONGRESS. Demand term limits and massive campaign finance reform that assures NO CORPORATE INFLUENCE in Washington. Make our elected officials accountable only to We the People.

In essence, throw ALL the bums out and start over. The ideas of the Founding Fathers have been destroyed. This is NOT what they had in mind when they went to war with England 230+ years ago. The system is good - those that are twisting it to their own agendas are not.

Is this the most important thing that Congress has to deal with right now? I don't remember hearing this in the list of things that Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and the other Democrats said they were going to do when they got into office. They were voted into office to make some real changes and so far they haven't accomplished anything.

Scourge - Disagreeing with the Ms. Pelosi's attempt to label this part of history is not an endorsement of genocide. I simply think it is a waste of time. What benefit is going to come out of this for anyone? Is the next step to pay each family of the victims for their loss?

The Ottoman Turks' genocide of Armenians is a fact. That event is one of the most documented atrocity in history, second only to the Holocaust in terms of the vast quantities of archival documents, evidences, and personal accounts available. That event was not a made-up nor exaggerated story. It cannot be denied, in the same way that the Holocaust cannot be denied. Turkey must admit to that crime and come to terms with that dark page in its history, in the same way that Germany did.

Now, is the US Congress supposed to ignore that fact and throw its resolution out of the window, just to appease and avoid antagonizing Turkey and losing the American bases in that country?.

This is a matter of principle and the whole world is watching on how the US will stand up to its principles.

No, she is doing her Constitutional mandated duty by representing the people who elected her to office.
Her job is to act in the interests of her California constituency.

Where you upset when Iran denied the Holocaust?
If so, why deny this genocide?
