Have you tried adjusting the gear cable?

Often the symptoms you're seeing are because the gear cable isn't quite the right length, usually due to stretching in the cable.

If you don't want to try adjusting it yourself then all decent bike shops will be able to help you out.

(You adjust it in the same way as you would a brake cable but getting it to the correct possition can take some trial and error).
