I have an employee who has been working for me for about 2 weeks. The problem is that he is falling asleep at work and also isn't understanding basic stock counts and balances. What should I do?

Well falling to sleep on the job would be a warning sign to me.
I own my own company and if some one feel asleep on the job they would be history. If you get what I mean.
As far as not grasping the job that may be a training issue or you did not explain the job well, I would give some one a chance to learn the job! Can you put this person with another employee that knows the job, or take the time to train the person yourself on how to do the job.
If after that they still can not do the job than it may be better to find another employee who can.

Is he doing college classes or a second job at this point? The exhaustion could be from that.

I'd agree with sitting him down and trying the retraining, have him do input as to what he isn't sure about, where things may be unclear to him. A lot of people are afraid to ask for help or think that if they do they'll be thought stupid.

You can ask about the tiredness also, if there's a way for him to work around that (shift schedules, go part time, etc.) it may be worth it. Just firing him isn't right in this job economy, it's hard to find another job in a very short time, especially if he's trying to support himself.

Sit him or her down and tell them again what you expect out of them. Have them sign something showing that you have talked to them about the situation. This is to cover your butt when it is time to release them if they do not improve.

you gotta get rid, he will pull your other workers down with him if you don't.. his uselessness will make people resent him and get uppety with you, they will refuse to help him do his work and YOU will suffer.. staff will respect you more for removing him and are more likelly to pull together to get his share done.
