well today i went to visit my mother. my little one didn't move in awhile,so i got nervous, and started playing with my belly a little to see if i could get him going. my mother seen this, and told me "you better hope you don't do that at the wrong time and mess up his development" and she continued to go on and on and made it seem like i could deform my baby.
so i just took a shower and laid on the sofa to watch some t.v, about a half hour after i poked my belly, he started moving and he can make my belly jump, and my mother was like well i hope your happy,
and has made me feel like i hurt him.
does this really hurt the baby? i wasn't doing it hard at all..
but if she is right about this i would like to know.

No, that's just an old wives tale that lingers from an older generation that did not have as much medical knowledge as we do now about babies in the womb.
In the days when women lost babies more than they do now, people attributed it to all sorts of causes, which now have been proven to be false.
We now know they are very well protected within the uterus in a cozy environment of amniotic fluid, as well as the fat and muscle in your abdomen. Only a major trauma could hurt the growing fetus.

Oh my gosh how mean of her!
That is so not true talking and playing with your baby are an essential part of your pregnancy!!!
I poke my baby all the time! Im 31 weeks and the other day when i went to my dr he said the baby's development was fine and he is nearly ready to come out!!!!
My husband talks and pokes my belly too!!! He says hes poking it to be good when he comes out!!!!
Gosh its ever so normal i don't think theres a pregnant woman who can honestly say shes never poked her belly!!!
Good luck and take care!!!!

OMG, I'm so sorry that your mom worried you enough that you even had to ask that question. What a ridiculous thing to say! No you won't hurt your baby by pushing some on your belly. Good lord... Now I wouldn't go stabbing at it constantly, but some poking to get movement is perfectly fine. My doc recommended it just yesterday when mine wasn't moving much...

No this doesnt hurt the baby. Your mother should back off. You can wiggle your belly all you want, it wont hurt the baby. The baby is surronded by so much liquid that unless you were punched or had a car wreck, you couldnt poke/wiggle enought to hurt them. Your mother is being a busy body.

Believe it or not....there are some crazy notions and beliefs that a lot of the older generations have that now we know are not necessarily true.
I was just talking to my MIL the other day, and she is from another country too that is very different than here, and she was like, "never excersize, don't drive...it will cause a miscarraige."
I just said ok, but ofcourse i excersize, ofcourse i drive.
Take it all with a grain of salt.

You can't hurt your baby by nudging him in your belly. The baby has a protective "bag of water" around him. This cushions him and protects him.
Alot of older women believe the old wives tales. She may actually belive you can hurt your baby.

Thats fine. She is concerned about her grand child so she might have reacted like that. Even if you feel that you hurt the baby, next time try some cold water or cold orange juice instead of playing around your belly.

Ok, now you said you touched the bely and your baby did not move. Your baby was probabley sleeping or tired. I do inform that poking the baby will cause it to be scared and not cooperate. When you poked your belly the baby got scared and eventually fell asleep. Id you keep poking it your baby will not move on spite of frightning. Your baby is fine. But do not poke. And tell your mother she has no right.

Your baby is so protected by your bag of water. There really isn't anything you can do to hurt the baby by just poking around trying to wake it up. If anything it is kind of fun.

THe mothers womb is made very well to protect your baby. Believe me I was hanging from monkey bars when I was pregnant. I wouldn't recomend that but the unborn is very well protect. I don't know why your mom would try to scare you like that. Your child is very safe. congrats.
