That's what I do and it seems to be a good system. I use a three or five subject notebook for each class. I kind of a slow learner and I have to work a lot harder for my good grades than others do, but I think it is a good system. I use the first section for class notes, the second for book notes, and the third for homework if the class requires it or test review that I do from writing my own study guide based on key points in lecture. If it is a hard class I need a five subject because I will fill two sections with book notes and two with test review. The students could do the same thing with a single subject notebook, if you think that would be enough paper for the semester. They could just take some masking tape and make little tabs on the pages to divide the sections.

Why not? Maybe you can use the two ends of a note book for the purpose - the front for notes and back for notes from your book!

no not necessarily, because you could lose your class notes by tearing pages out that book. if you want to tear pages out of a book, let it be a book that you don't really use and that way you'll have nothing to lose.
