"The Giver" is excellent. I read it in 8th grade in like 2 hours without putting it down. It won a Newberry Award, I believe, but many people consider another one of the author's book "Number the Stars" to be very good too. That probably won the award as well.

I LOVED "Wrinkle in Time" by Madeleine L'Engle and it has the Newbery award.

Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell was one of my favorite books as a child, and I still love it. I actually went out and bought a new copy because I had lost mine from when I was a little girl.

Don't know if it won an award but "we need to talk about kevins"good. also Alice seabold's The Lovely Bones is fantastic
