White vinegar is the answer. They best way to use it is to wash the clothes as normal in the machine, but use the vinegar instead of fabric softener. I use roughly the same quantity that I would of standard (not concentrated) fabric softener. When the clothes come out of the machine they smell of nothing, not even washing powder.
I found using it in this way is the best - if you use it neat or hand wash you may be left with the vinegar smell.

Try this site......good tips.
Soak the clothes in Borax overnight, or if it is really bad I would let them soak all day and all night, wring them out and use Borax as a laundry booster when you wash the clothes. Can also soak them white vinegar and water, (about 2cups Vinegar to a 5-gallon bucket should do the trick, and again I would soak them overnight, then just wash as usual. I will tell you and anyone that reads this that the vinegar will set the colors in the clothes....so be careful of the colors running together....do separate batches if you have too or you can ruin a favorite shirt.

try to find an aromatherapy oil that you and your man like.
They smell really strong and usually stick around after washing but also different oils have different properties such as Tea tree oil can kill bacteria, bacteria is what makes the smell so you need to kill that off.
The problem of this smell occuring needs to be sorted, BO should not be this strong so your man needs to find out why. Maybe poor diet or medications!

There is odour neutralising products you can get such as Febreeze. That should work if not try soaking in nappy san and appliying wasing liquid directly to the armpit areas before putting it in the wash. Also hang out to dry in the sun as this will help to eliminate odurs. Good Luck.
Oh and maybe try some new deoderant for your husband! LOL

Have you tried soaking the clothes first in biological powder (such as "Biotec") Leave for ten minutes, then rub the smelly parts of the clothes for a while. Then wah as normal.
If this doesn't work, your man might try wearing a strong deoderant - there are some on the market for strong BO.
Good luck, I hope this helps.

I have a husband so this is all too familiar. Between his shirts and socks...well, it's a stink pit. I have found that using Tide with Febreze works wonders! You can pour a little bit onto the spots and pre-treat before washing. Also....bleaching (Considering the said shirts are white) them out will also get rid of the odor. Bleach kills everything! Hope this helps.....I know your pain.

After a period of years, the smell won't ever come out. Time for new shirts.
If vinegar and/or baking soda won't get the smell out, nothing will. I just hope he doesn't smell while he's sitting next to you on the couch!
