Easy.
Greatest weakness: The truth isn't on their side. That's why you see so many personal attacks, smears, outright lies. They can't debate President Bush on the realities of Iraq so they call him a terrorist and murderer. They smear Rush Limbaugh because they cannot refute what he says. Character assassination is the tool of the desperate.
Greatest strength: They have the mainstream media on their side. Don't underestimate that. In my opinion, its the only thing keeping liberals in control of the Democrat party. Amnesty, Gay Marriage and the SCHIP lie are perfect examples. All were widely rejected by most Americans, Republican and Democrat. If the liberals controlled the Democrat party, and there were as many liberals as we've been led to believe, that would not have been the case.

Lack of effective solutions. When I ask Democrats I know what their plan is to solve the problems we face in our society. The answer invariably comes back as a suggestion for another expensive entitlement program, or the standard Republicans are worse fare. I will grant them that the Republicans aren't much better, but just complaining about the opposition does not constitute a plan for change and threatening to take more money out of my pocket through taxation is not the way to win my vote. The Democratic Party has no clear direction these days and this is their greatest failing. As for strengths, I do not see any, nor do I believe that there will be any until they divest themselves of the decidedly leftist leadership at the top of the party hierarchy.

Liberal philosophy is difficult to describe, because it's very all encompassing and far reaching. For this reason, many solutions exist that are suitable to be adopted by the Democratic party, however their is little concensus as to which ones are best, and so within the party you have a struggle for ideas. This makes them appear to be disorganized, and perhaps because they are. This is probably their greatest weakness.
Conservatism is about keeping what you have, so they might have a hard time selling a change in policy to their base, which expects more of the same. For this reason, conservative ideology evolves slower than liberal ideology, which is more nimble and capable of changing on a whim (for better or for worse). This could be a strength of the Democrats.

Their stregnth is their appeal to those with lower incomes and minorities, and to liberal intellectuals. They appear to care more for working individuals. Their weakness is probably their perceived weakness on national security. They've been fighting that since Truman.
I think there are two good spokesman today for both parties. Newt Gingrich is the most articulate for the conservative cause, and Barack Obama for the liberal cause. Go to youtube and look up Obama's 2004 speech at the Democratic National Convention. That's the 1 best speech I've seen in years that encapsulates the best of the democrats' ideals.

I could spend all day on the weaknesses:
1) they never met a tax increase they didn't like.
2) they never met a spending increase they didn't like.
3) they actually believe that the government can solve all your problems!
4) their representatives in Congress are only interested in symbolic gestures rather than doing anything constructive. WHAT is with that resolution against the Turks??!!
5) their candidates for president tend to obsess over this or that special interest group rather than having a big-picture plan for their administration.
Strengths?
1) I think they really do care about the poor and children, though they have a tendency to pursue misguided solutions.
2) That's about it!

Trying to use socialist goals to obtain power is their weakness. If they would look at states like Michigan with a Democrat governor they may conclude this not for them on a national scale.
Their strength is they have many followers who refute history, and /or want the government to have the power over their lives "Nanny State." to the chagrin of the conservative who wants nothing less than our constitutional freedom.

True liberal Democrats with altruistic goals and dedication to the commitments which they uphold are a valuable asset to any republic or democracy. You cannot have a well functioning government with only conservatives or only liberals, there must be a balance.
Democrats have a tendency to care about those things which conservatives don’t focus on and vice a versa. It’s why we are different. Just like in any relationship if the two participants are identical the ideas and subsequent solutions are inhibited.

Weakness right now is pandering to the far left.
It already cost them the White House.
Now with there attempt to control only Talk Radio.
It doesn't do well for them.
Strength is they consider the party of the "people".

They work on Bills for the sake of getting headlines! I live in NY State where that's all the Liberals care about ("How it sounds in the paper"). Upstate has a 25% poverty rate, and we have 75% Democrats. They have not solved any of this. They feed off of it.
Strengths: They get away with taking enormous property taxes from working families. They're great at that.

Their weakness is how they allowed the right to alter the view and perception of voters as being unpatriotic liberal spenders... through their smear tactics. Their strenght is not scooping down to that that level, but by doing the work through good policy.
