Signals sent through the cellphones do not directly go to the satellite. They go through various cell sites and is decoded there and then go to the satellite which in turn sends it out to another cell site then bounced to the receivers phone. In essence it wouldn't work in space because the signal of a cell site would not be able to get to it there.

Cell phones do not transmit to or receive from satellites. Only satellite phones do that. And even those might not work in space because the satellites use directional antennae pointed toward the ground, not out to space.
