Not stupid in the least, I once wondered the same. They are paid in a few ways, One, consider the advertising. 3 billion people a day, looking at the same ad? Probably gonna make some money there. Then, remembere that your ISP isn't giving you a reason TO buy the internet, so they will pay big sited like yahoo and google as well, depending on how used they are, because they are giving people a reason to purchase the interwebz.
Hope this helped, and a very intelligent question as well!

It's all in advertising. Advertiser will pay a ton a money a month because sites like that get millions of hits a month. The more people see your ad the more likely they will make money too.

You pay your bills to your ISP (Internet Service Provider) and then your ISP pays to the world wide web for accessing their routers and then the websites have a sharestock and earn money depending on how much their site is visited

advertisers pay to have them ads put on them. search engines also get paid by some websites to list their sites first; for instance the top 5 on yahoo are usually "sponosor results"

Not to mention they're publically-traded... you can buy stock in sites like yahoo and MSN, which also support the web-based companies.
