Partly cultural tradition (different cultures have different conventions when naming), and is also highly influenced by the predominance of patriarchal societies. Since the man, especially in history, is considered the head of the family, the family takes on the father's name.

I've seen more deviation from this rule as of late.

its normally done when the parents are either not married so the kid has both surnames in a double barrelled name

so in Alberts case it would be Albert Nolan-Smith not Albert Smith or Albert Nolan

some married people do it also. mainly tho the posh upper class types, you see no end of posh toffs with double barrelled name on tv etc...

It is a cultural decision -- some cultures use both names -- a few use just the mother's name -- and many, especially those that come from European ancestry, use just the father's name.

But a couple can use both names if they choose -- or the child, once they become an adult, can change to include both.

Many times the divorce is so brutal that the wife asks for her maiden name back and gets it, but keeps the chilren with his last name to make sure everyone knows they are his responsibility for child support.

A lot of the spanish orgin give their kids both last names.

Personally, I wouldn't do both..my kids name would be super long. Plus, it is tradition to give the father's name.

Our culture follows patrilineage. It is tradition; however, I do know people who were given their mother's maiden name as their last name.
