I have been smoking and driving for 17 years and have it down to a fine art. What does distract me more are all the speed cameras and signs etc everywhere.
Speed cameras and too many signs should be banned.
I will never quit smoking in my car regardless of any more draconian laws.

The main reason the do-gooders are trying to have smoking banned whilst driving is because they so easily got away with banning smoking in public places without a fuss from the public. The government have realised that the great British public will bow down and except anything that the government say.
I hate to think what will be banned next??? breathing loudly in a lift? laughing whilst at work?
God only knows.
But until the British public stand up for their civil liberties then anything can be banned.

Different reasons for the two different bans -- public places are because of secondary smoke and health concerns for non-smokers.

Bans on smoking while driving are a safety concern -- because smoking takes up one of your hands, at least part of the time, and a dropped cigarette during traffic -- or during a response to a traffic emergency -- could easily result in a car fire.

Cigarettes can be banned while driving the same way they can ban cell phones or eating or reading while driving -- it has nothing to do with the smoking or the phones or the eating or reading being bad -- it has to do with the distractive effect of those activities on the driving itself.

I agree with AL J, next we wont even be able to have manual cars because changing gear takes a hand off the wheel. we wont be able to have a good scratch if we get an itch, pick our noses, get an eye lash out of our eyes. swat a wasp/fly/bee etc..

its getting all to crazy.

whilst i advocate good driving, it would be easier to reduce accidents by people not driving too close and at speed.

a majority of accidents is because of speed and tailgating.

i do smoke at the wheel, and i pretty dam well sure i dont light up in a daft place like junctions unless stopped fully, roundabouts, pulling onto or off a motorway. the only time i light up whilst in motion is when im on a straight road with a good 30-40 yeards clear of traffic infront of me, or my missus hands me one.

the worst of this is, if that social workers and other council workers etc...come round your house, your not allowed to smoke whilst they are there. I mean how daft is that? you pay council tax to live in a house, that gives you the right to do what you want in it. if they dont like it, stand outside.

we should all march to downing street and smoke outside, imagine the uproar it would cause if 100's of us lit up, they couldnt do a thing as your allowed to smoke outside lol.

it is advised against in the highway code because smoking (like dringking/eating) at the wheel diverts attention from the road.

The ban affects pubs as it is a public space and the majority of the uk are non smokers

I've been driving and smoking ( and will continue to) for 20 years - never caused me a problem - comparing it to driving whilst using a mobile phone is wrong - most people with a brain are able to move the hand back and forth from their mouth whilst doing other things.

What next ? - illegal to pick your nose and drive ? - illegal to operate the car radio/CD player whilst driving ? - illegal to read road signs whilst driving.

It's all rubbish - stupid laws made by stupid people !

Because the governement recently commissioned a study on road traffic accidents and people smoking. It found that a certain percentage of crashes were based on people smoking in their cars. e.g. dropping it whilst driving, putting it out etc.
