There is a concerted effort still underway by the right-wing (NOT conservatives in general) to abrogate the civil rights and liberties of Amrican citizens--including the following:

>Freedom of the press (by jailing reporters who refuse to reveal sources)
>Freedom of assembly (by arresting people who attempt to peacfully protest, or even so much as wear a protest T-shirt) at a public appearance by Bush, Cheney, etc.
>Freedom from unreasonable searches--by wiretapping Americans without warrents
>Due process--by denying right o flegal counsel todetainees
>Freedom of movement--the TSA "watch lists" are used to deny travel rights to Americans wanting to fly without any right of appeal (also violates due process)
>The right not to incriminate oneself and to be free from cruel and unusual punishment (the use of torture)
>freedom of religion--via attempts to fund right wing churches 9the "faith-based initiatives" that funnel tax money to the religious right), profile people based on religious belief, and pass laws mandating people abide by the right's religious dogma
>Freedom of speech--as with the resolution they tried to pass to intimidate "moveon.org" for criticizing Bush policy in Iraq
>The right to face ones's accuser (various), to a lawyer if accused of a crime, the right of habaeus corpus,.

I am NOT exaggerating--every one of these is a right that the Bush regime has specifically stated it wishes to eliminate (or "restrict"--wich amounts to the same thing).

We are allowing the degradation of our 4th amendment rights by allowing Irving Texas cops to racially profile hispanic looking drivers, pull them over, and ask for ID from every passenger.

This applies to police check points as well. The check point makes the assumption that every motorist on the road has committed a crime and needs to be stopped and checked. What happened to probable cause and evidence. This also impedes my freedom of movement.

I guess the 4th amendment only applies to white people like me.

By allowing the government to essentially piss on the Ninth and Tenth Amendments whenever they pass new legislation that forces you to send more money to them to pay for someone else's Medicare, or someone else's retirement.

* Still here, but the passage of Section 1076 of the John Warner Defense Appropriation Act for Fiscal Year 2007 grants the president the right to commandeer federal troops or state National Guard to use them domestically. The language of that legislation allows the president to use federal troops or the National Guard in federal service in a wide range of emergencies, including natural disasters, epidemics or other public health emergencies, terrorist attacks, insurrections, or domestic violence, including conspiracies to commit domestic violence....."
