My mother passed away last year. I was talking to a friend who suggested that I check for any unclaimed funds from her estate. I didn't find any from my mother, but I did find one from my great-aunt. But to claim it, I have to prove I am related to her. Is this close enough relationship and how can I prove I'm her great-niece?

There are other closer relatives such as my aunt and uncle who would be her direct nephew and niece.

You can claim the money if you are the closest living relative. For proof you will need birth certificates for yourself and the people you are related through; marriage certificate if through marriage; and death certificates for other relatives.
