Help, I rented a house and there is a very bad oder when you first walk in.I have tried sprays.I clean very good, left windows open, checked for leaky pipes and done everything I can think of to get rid of the smell. We even had the owner check for sewer gasses but to no satisfaction. This smell is driving me crazy because I feel that if anyone comes to visit it's the first thing that hits them.Does anyone know any sollutions for this problem. My next step is to buy an air purifier but I really don't know what type to buy or if it would even work. PLEASE any suggestions would be helpful as to how to get rid of the smell or of type of air purifier that is not too expensive that you know that works on oders. Thanks for any help

What does the smell smell like?

If there is carpet in the area, you may want to pull the carpet up to see if there is mold or mildew in (or under) the padding.

Also, if you have a crawl space under the house, you may want to have the landlord look under the house. When I was renting, I got a horrible smell in my apt. one time and couldn't find the source of it in the house. My landlord looked under the house and a possum had gotten under there and died and THAT was the odor! Talk about stinky!

There must be some kind of damp in the house which is usually the reason for bad smells that linger. You will have to have this out with your landlord. I know I couldn't live in a house with a smell issue. The only thing I can suggest is that you put plug in air fresheners in every room. The only other route would be to call up a specialist to come and fumigate all the house. At the end of the day it is your landlord that should pay for this not you. Good luck.

If the smell is that bad and there's no way to get rid of it, you should be able to get compensation from the landlord and change house. Hopefully you're not too settled in and can get out while you still can. Ask a lawyer, I know that if the house has certain problems that make it an "inadequate living environment" you can void the contract and get monetary compensation for damages.

Although I hope you find a way to fix it. Have you tried asking on Yahoo answers? Oh, right. lol. Seriously, good luck!

If after cleaning the carpet cleaning your home and it should be smelling clean but still doesn't, try using an oil burner. It smells terrific. A small tea candle burning oil can make a difference even in a big room; it is amazing. We use it at home and some rooms. Not only is it decorative, they eliminate any bad odor and our guests are greeted by its great scent once they enter the house.
Search in google images oil burner to see different kinds =) hope it helps!

An air purifier most likely won't omit the smell.

Do you have a carpet? If so, the carpet could have pet stains, food stains, etc. from the previous tenant.

Try to locate where the odor is coming from. Once you know the central location, it could help in omitting the foul odor.

By the way, what kind of smell is it?

If it is a dead animal, it will take awhile to go away, but living on a farm and every couple years we get this. Yuck! But I boil vanilla extract slowly on the stove; sprinkle baking soda on the carpet and let sit awhile and vac. and burn those 'smelly candles' when company coming and most importantly, spray Febreze around the rooms when I leave. Usually one of these techniques work (or all), and leave windows open to air it all out. I suspect we even had a dead cat under a crawl space on the side of the house and boy, was that bad, but couldn't get to it! (So I threw a couple mothballs under there, which also go in our attic to ward off bats). Good luck!

Have the owner pull some drywall loose in various rooms and look behind it. Sounds like a mold problem.

I forgot to mention that it may just be the dead bodies buried under the house by the serial killer who used to live there.
