Okay, I have a 1998 Plymouth Neon...I bought it for like 800 bucks...which I think was a really good deal. Anyway, we just got a new rack and pinion put in it, because it was leaking power steering fluid horribly. But now, if we turn the wheel a certain way you can hear this sort of creaking sound...like somebody walking on a creaky floor. There are no apparent problems with the steering or drivability that I can tell...just that noise. What do you think it could be? Also, when we first start the car and use the brakes, they will make a screeching noise. But after we've been driving it for a few minutes, it goes away. We've checked the pads and shoes and everything is fine with that. What are your opinions on what these things could be?

It's definitely not leaking power steering fluid anymore...I've kept a close eye on that. I really did suspect that it was just something that needed greased. We have new rotors, pads, and shoes.

We went to Advance Auto Parts and bought a re-manufactured rack and pinion.

First, your creaking noise is from the mcpherson strutts, G.M. had this problem for several years, it is nothing to worrie about, but to fix it you need to take the top of the strut loose from the car, and lube the pad with some grease, then get an alignment. your second noise is from moisture that collectsd on your brake rotors, and is common on alot of small cars. i wouldn't worrie about it, but a simple repair would be to buy a cheaper brake pad that wouldn't last as long, it will have less metalic in it so the noise might be less. as for the answere that said that the C.V. joint is dry. first off , a C.V. joint is sealed, and usually doesn't need to be relubricated unless the boot had been torn. second, thing is that it would be more of a clicking sound, and usuall heard all the time, but louder turning.

First off, you have two separate problems that are probably related, squeaking when you're steering and intermittent squealing from the brakes. Check the routing of the brake lines and make sure the hoses aren't pinched from incorrect routing. If the brake noise was caused by the wear squealers, it wouldn't go away, it would happen every time you used the brakes. Steering rack problem, if you're sure it's not leaking, (it was a rebuilt unit or new?), then it may be caused by internal leakage. Another possibility is to verify if the noise is coming from the steering rack or the pump. When a pump is going out or low on fluid it will make a horrible noise, with a new steering rack and no leaks, that bumps up the operating pressure in the system which puts more demand on your pump and causes the noise.

Of course it's hard to tell without seeing the things you describe - but - it sounds like it's still leaking steering fluid - have you looked under the car before you start it in the morning? Make note of ANY liquids you find, their color and smell - but don't taste them of course - and if you have a pet dog or cat, keep them away, the automobile fluids are deadly - if it becomes difficult to turn the steering wheel then it is definitely still leaking fluid ... You said you checked the pads and shoes but you hear a screetching sound - you did not mention the rotors - i believe as rotors wear down there is a "wire" inside them which is intended to alert you to the fact they've worn down too far - this "wire" is actually there to make a horrible noise when it comes in contact with the pads or shoes - I'm sorry I can't recall exactly what this "wire" embedded in the rotor is called.

good luck.

the squeak coming from the brakes are normal. for some reason, they will squeak most every time you drive it for like the first minute. but this is normal. About the creaking noise, if it isnt causing any problems, leave it alone. It may just be a cheap rack and it just squeaks a little.

Inner tie rod sounds like it is bad. Sometimes you can get a bad rack from store. IT HAPPENS. When you did the brake job, did you grease the correct parts of the brakes? Alot of ppl don't do this and they end up with a noise.

did you put grease or lubricant on the gears of the rack and pinion steering... they have brake pad lubricant you put on the back side of the break pad to stop squeaks

u have bad ball joints...screaching brakes nothing to worry abt unless it makes u nuts....if so have them check for glazed pads or missing anti rattle clips....there is a paste that can b put on back of pads to stop noise.

You have sticky brake pistons at the wheels and they need a good clean out and you have a constant velocity joint at the noisy front wheel that needs a good grease ~~
