Usually the news editor and producer. Politicians and special interest groups also play a part in letting news people know what they want the public to hear. It is interesting, if not sad, what our news outlets have become today. They used to report the news and deliver the un-biased straight facts. Now they are all opinionated, every story has a trumped up teaser, and everything is breaking news. It all revolves around ratings and entertainment now which is really sad. I get most of my news online and try not to watch local or network news anymore. They disgust me.

generally, editors (for print) or producers (for broadcast), but owners/beancounters can stick their influence in as well.

they generally conform to existing traditional assumptions, and respond to what sells. As private ventures, advertising is, directly or indirectly, the bottom line. Thus death, sex, scandal and taxes get more play than 'boring' human interest or 'good' news; and we the consumers reward those assumptions by lapping it up.

But it is a myth to assume that news was better, 'unbiased' in the past. in the mid-20th century, there was an effort for standards, but this was and remains the exception, not the rule. News reporting has always been slanted in the interests of the financial interests (owners and advertisers) or the expected tastes of the audience.

Consumers of the media decide what's newsworthy. Stories that typically garner ratings and sell newspapers are given the highest priority and amount of coverage.

Sadly the people have spoken... they have chosen celebrity gossip and sensationalism.

Probably big business & Big Brother, but I think you should apply for the job TD--get the BS off the news and the truth on. We have access channels here, where 'regular' people can get on and tell the REAL news...you should look into it where you are!!

The editors at the news, i guess. But it should be the people. Don't people write to news people and get their stories broadcasted, though?

Editors, I believe. But since they have to please sponsors or advertisers and they tend to slant things that will win approval (eg: raise ratings to get top ad dollar), does that not mean that the sponsors decide?

Usually ratings/controversy which really just = $$$.

Very sad. However, we only have ourselves to blame for wanting to view smut all day long!
