Before email, your job description was as indicated in your contract. Now, you are even obligated to answer corporate emails from your boss, associates, contacts etc. They'll even get mad if you don't reply to their email asap. This would usually take anywhere between an hour up to almost half a day of work.
Before email, I came to work, typing away on a typewriter, filling out forms, sorting out paper, punching holes on them, file them on folders and go home. Everything was not complicated back then.

Hmm I started working during the email era so I can't say what it was like for sure, but I'm guessing a lot more faxes, snail mail and telephone calls.
It might have been a bit slower, but I don't think it had to have been very different. If you didn't have e-mail, you'd probably just call the person on the phone and talk to him/her. And if you needed to send the same message to many people (ex. mailing list) I guess you'd either send faxes or letters in the post (a lot more work for the secretaries I guess).
I bet it allowed for more interaction with colleagues: now people send emails to people sitting in the next office, once they would have gotten up and spoken to them in person!
The real question is, what was it like before Computers were invented! Having to write everything down on paper....I think that must have been a much bigger change!

Before E-mail & cell phones people worked 8 hours a day, 40 hours a week, had weekends off, got home from work the same time every day, sat down and ate a hot meal with the whole family just like human beings.
40 years ago, on an average middle class income, a family of 4 with only the husband working, could own a home, buy a new car every 5 years, go on a family vacation once a year, save for retirement, and pay for college for both kids.

A lot more phone calls. More person to person meetings. A LOT MORE PAPER!
I remember what it was like when fax machines arrived in offices.
The internet didn't even exist when I was in College. Imagine what it was like to do projects in school and having to use real books to do research?!?

It was a lot more productive.
You actually talked to people directly or used the phone.
