Now this depends, if your looking at it as an evolutionary question the "mutated" species would have been in the egg. so speaking from a Darwinian point of view, the answer is the egg. creationists believe that G-d created the heavens, the earth and all the creatures that inhabit it, including the chicken.

I'm appalled. Every single previous answer refers to biblical references on this biology question format. "Belief" in the bible doesn't make it so.

The egg came first. There are many, many egg laying species that have been around for 100s of million of years. Dinosaurs were egg-layers and ancestors to birds. New species come about when there is a rare favorable mutation in the fertilized egg. No chicken ancestor ever turned into a chicken after hatching.

Depends on what you believe in. If you believe in the bible, God created animals, not eggs to be hatched later. So, if you believe in God, the chicken came first.

God created animals, not eggs. Maybe it's chicken first.

the chicken !!! --- the chicken fornicates with an other chicken ( called a rooster ) and thence we have an egg from this lovely relationship --- which will become one of two things --- cooked --- or incubated .
i might add --- the same can be said for the parents of the egg --- roasted or deep fried --- or if you get real lucky --- frozen !! --- your time is not now !! wow!!
em ! i'll have poached eggs on toast ; thanks !!! lol !
