1) Defense. Jihadists are the first non-state enemy to attack the US. State enemies are beginning to look easy: peace-talks, sanctions, etc. But how do you stop smoke from coming through a vent? We know that freedom has an inverse relationship to human rights abuse, so we promote freedom in the area. Put out the fire, so to speak.
2). And yes, oil in the hands of an enemy could lead to a disaster in the U.S.
3) And yes, the U.S. stationed to the east & west of Iran is a very smart move.
4) Guilt. The US has twice let down the Kurds & Shia, the second time leading to ethnic cleansing by Saddam.
5) More Guilt: Earlier sanctions led to starvation of Iraqi children (hence, oil for food program which was a corrupt disaster.)
6) Even more guilt: Iraq was created from the Ottoman Empire in WWI so the Brits could have oil. Their once-promised democracy fell through in the 1950s and we left the Iraqis in the hands of thugs.

Democracy because it promotes the distribution of recourses to the people. Right now in the middle east the vast sums of money generated from oil revenue is spent on government with very little of it going to the people. In a democratic society the people would have a voice in were the vast revenue’s are spent. They do not have this choice now
Oil export revenues are forecast at $522 billion for 2007
Their currently are no Democracy’s in the middle east that export oil but there are progressive countries like, Qatar and the UAE that have been very good at distribution of wealth among it people.
So to answer your question it would be Democracy to promote stable countries that would grantee stable oil

First, as zahid and a couple of other posters have confirmed, this question is troll bait.
As for the actual reasons for US presence in the region, I think its threefold: First you have the whack jobs with aspirations of blowing up Israel and flying planes into American buildings - who must be dealt with on their soil. If the need for this arises, nations in the region can be positioned as "buffer zones."
Secondly, democratic governments ... peaceful and with greater control over their economies ... would be better countries for the US to deal with.
Resources come in third IMO, especially since the tar reserves in Alberta carry more oil than all of Saudi Arabia.

Actually, they are both valid reasons. Yes, they want the oil, but it also serves them better - and the region - if Iraq is a stable democracy. It's important for the US to have a "firendly" western style government.

What the Americans want for the future is a MacDonalds on every street corner in every town across the world....they seek to impose their will upon foreign cultures, regardless of offending anyone (mind you, the oil in the Middle East is a major incentive as well...)

I don't believe it's as simple as it's for the oil, its not like the U.S. is stealing the oil. They would like to have democratic elected officials in all middle east countries, because they are nieve in their thinking that this will bring peace to that region. If peace was in the region then there would be less turbulunce in the production and delivery of the oil the U.S. buys.
Zahid your far to close minded

USA wanted the oil in the Middle East in the guise of propagating democracy and eliminating terrorism.

what USA wants ? To make Israel dominate the region ,
what they want to do for future? To continue to be at service of Zionists.
Oil is just a lollipop for these services.
