It all depends on the nature of your disability. In your case I doubt your primary doctor would count much when you have a psychiatrist.

I haven't asked my doctor but my guess is she is younger than my 37 year old daughter. So far everything is going well but way different than I have been experiencing in the last 10 years. First she puts prescriptions right into her computer while I am still in the room, by the time I go downstairs they are ready. Also they only make appts for same day or next day, I am still having a hard time adjusting to this, I am used to calling 3 weeks ahead of time and having to hold on the appt line beginning at 7:00 am in the morning, often waiting on phone for 30 minutes then being told to call same time tomorrow because all appts have been filled. I recognize her desire to be a good doctor. Also for the first time in five years my overactive thyroid has been controlled and my last blood test showed no extra thyroid in my blood. She had increased my antithyroid meds by 50%, who knew it would work, and why didn't the other doctors make that simple adjustment, hopefully now I can keep my thyroid instead of having it removed, which is what my last specialist indicated was necessary.

Your psychiatrist can be the only one to say that you need SSDI, as far as I know. If your primary care doc is giving you a hard time, I would get a new one. Ask your psychiatrist whom he/she recommends.

You have enough to worry about as it is without your doctor giving you a hard time! Schizophrenia is devastating. My best friend's brother is schizophrenic and I've seen what is has done to his life.

Good luck!

Yes--your physicians (any or all of them) can provide you with letters certifying your disability andtha tyou cannot work. That kind of documentation may be requested when your case is reviewed, so it's good to have them ready.

Doctors do this routinely--just call and request that they prepare a letter for you.
