Loyalty to George W. Bush? Or health care for millions of children? In a crucial vote on Thursday, that's the choice that Republican members of Congress will have to make.
There's nothing complicated about this. George W. Bush is the last man standing in the way of children getting the health care they need. And he can be pushed out of the way with 15 more Republican votes.
But, it won't be easy. These lock-step Republicans have lined up with one failed Bush policy after another. They'd rather break the hearts of children and their families than break with Bush.
Please no republican talking points about how this only helps adults or only helps rich kids, if that were true you republicans would be supporting it and bush would have signed it into law since he LOVES helping rich people.

I would not compare nicotine addiction to a race. I do see your point. The Government should offer, along with this law,a Smoking Cessation Program for those who do not want to be unfairly Taxed. If you don't smoke then you won't have to pay this tax.

They don't have enough votes in the House, but I and the middle class (35K-105K) will remember this come '08.

I don't oppose the health bill, I oppose the way that it will be funded, it will be on the back of the tobacco industry and all tobacco users as an added tax on tobacco products. doing this makes this a punitive tax on a certain sector of the American population.

Additionally health care is a state issue, not a federal issue, there is nothing in the Constitution that say that the federal government is responsible for anyones health care needs.
Where is the ACLU and why aren't they complaining about this.

If you want this health care plan to be fair then all Americans need to pay, one way would be to impose a 1/2% federal sales tax, everyone buys something so all will pay. Normally I do not support tax increases but I do not support a punitive tax that punishes a certain segment of the population.
How would you feel if we payed for it by taxing all blacks or all Vietnamese or any other race.

I stand behind Bush's veto because of this.

Edit: I am not comparing nicotine to a race, I am comparing the basis of a group of people, while there are smokers in all races of people you simply should not tax them on that alone.
I don't smoke (any more) but the truth is no other member of society has been more discriminated against than smokers.

Why not tax alcohol instead, more people drink than smoke?

Courage:

Are you aware that what started this flap over S-CHIP was that Bush sent a request to congress for MORE money to support it???????

I didn't think so.

The Democrats siezed a political opportunity.

They freaked out when they saw that Bush beat them to the punch on funding health care for UN-INSURED children.
Soooooo, they sent back the request with a bill to change S-CHIP to include ALREADY INSURED children of people making $80K along with some ADULTS and raised the amount of the funding. Yes, they RAISED SPENDING. Imagine that!

If the Democrats were so concerned about "THE KIDS" why don't they take the adults out of the program and cover even MORE KIDS?

You seem like an above average intellect. How in the world did you fall for this teary-eyed political slop?

Let me point out the one obviously common republican response to this S-CHIP issue. "Parents should be taking care of their children not the Government." Let me then say that THESE ARE CHILDREN. The adults can be responsible for their own actions and to whether or not they were successful enough to have health care. CHILDREN should be cared for regardless of who their parents are or what their parents have done. If conservatives truly believed that children should suffer for their parents mistakes then why aren't they Pro-abortion. The truth is they only care about how expensive their cigarettes are.

Why should Congress override the Veto. Because it is the right thing to do. Thats why the Veto is never going to fail.

By the way you phrased your question and then ranted about republican talking points you don't want the truth, you just want people to agree with you, well sorry to disappoint you. The bill is a bad bill, I have posted it many times and you should take the time to read it, then you may see things in a different light, and realize that it helps the wrong children.

Simply put it threatens their alliance with the "for profit health care system" This is a major cash cow for Republicans seeking re-election.

To the Republicans thumbing me down, I showed proof of my answer, where is yours????
That's the whole problem with you Republicans you all live in talking points, rarely going any deeper to see how corrupt your party truly is.

You are delusional. Congress should not override the veto. All children in the US have access to health care. To say otherwise is a bold faced lie.
Children get the health care they need as long as their parents are properly taking care of them.
There are no failed Bush policies. Another bold faced lie. Republicans are not in lock step. Check the record of Arlen Specter for one. Another bold faced lie on your part.
The US government should not be in the health insurance business. Health insurance belongs in the private sector. This 35 billion dollar expansion is a back-door attempt at getting to socialize medicine by increments.
I don't want the US government taking my tax money, by force, to give it to someone else...especially to those who are adults and those who can afford to pay.

More government is not the answer to our problems. Parents should be taking care of their own children's health care and stop relying on the government. Just like the Dems, always looking for another handout.

It's not about the children,it's about a lot of added crap they attached to the bill.
And where are you going to get the money?
