The same thing happened near where I live (UK) a few months ago; a woman was visited by the police because her two daughters were drawing chalk pictures outside. It's ridiculous, children have drawn on the pavement (sidewalk to you) since chalk was invented. It washes off after a a couple of rainy days.
edit* LOL! I suddenly have this image in my head of a six year old girl surrounded by a swat team: "freeze! drop the chalk and get on the ground or we blow your head off!"

You are right that is sad! As a Mom with little ones who love to draw with chalk a 5 gal. bucket of water can take care of a big area and a whole lot cheaper than the fine. The woman who called the police needs to take a long hard look in the mirror!
Peace.

I wouldn't call that grafitti. If she wanted to get on anybody for it,She should the stores or company for making sidewalk chalk.I think someone doesn't have enough to do during the day.Sidewalk chalk is so much fun for kids and keeps them from really doing graffitti. When I was little we get a stick and write in the dirt, I guess she would turn me in also.

Wow. My kids always loved sidewalk chalk. The neighbors thought their "artwork" was great.
Some people are so petty. It's too bad the police have to respond to calls like that but they have no choice. First step would be to change the law.

that's b.s. as a new yawka i can tell you if she took that to court the judge would dismiss it. why? because the sidewalk chalk washes off anyway and generally fades in less than a week and what doesn't fade gets washed away when it rains. if i was the mother i would have fought that! children have been doing that for over a century in nyc, especially little girls when they want to play hop-scotch. tht was a bored old hag who has no life. i would have been tempted to kick the lady azz who reported such non-sense. those police should have laughed in that lady's face.

Laws for this, laws for that. If people would use common sense. Today, we can't let our child walk home from school, ride their bikes to the corner store, or even use their imagination.
The simple easy living days are over.
This 6 yr old may have turn into the next Michael Angelo, now she will be discouraged from showing her creative side.

Well, I do think it's ridiculous, but I guess that's New York for you. I could understand the fine if she were writing on some public building or something, but a sidewalk!? Come on... what's the harm in that!?

Maybe the city was jealous becaue they want to do all the chalk drawing. Don't they outline bodies on the sidewalk all the time? Glad we don't have that law or our grandkids would be hardend criminals by now! peace
