I want to teach my brother a lesson. I'm fed up of him using the computer every times he comes around, which is every day. He doesn't contribute towards the bill even though he's got a few bob. What can i do with the computer to make it look like it's broke down, without pulling any plugs. Thankyou.

Elana, if the computer broke down. He wouldn't touch it and he'd certainly wouldn't pay for it to get fixed.

you could unplug the hard drive, it's a simple matter but you have to actually open the computer, or an easier one is unplug the power from the motherboard (look in your computer, first see the big box in you pc that the power cord comes into, then follow the multi-colored cable from the box to the motherboard and unplug it just a little, it will not be able to boot the computer)
only other thing to do is password protect it and 'forget' the password, or claim you got hacked and someone changed the password,
a good way to make an uncrackable password to a non hacker is mix some words (foreign words are best especially if they are not in an english dictionary) with your birthday in hexadecimal (use your computer's calculator in scientific mode and change from numeric birthday decimal to hexideximal)
i personally believe that the cables are easier if you are not the most computer literate

The correct and most secure way to protect your computer from freeloaders is to password protect your ENTIRE Windows account, allowing no one else access to it. Just go to Start > Control Panel > User Accounts > Change an account. After you set-up a password then choose to make your folders private.
Now, if you must let anyone else use your PERSONAL computer ,such as your bro, (not recommended), you should set up a Guest Account for them with limited privledges. Go to Start > Control Panel > User accounts > pick an account to change > Guest. Not only will a Guest Account keeps your data safe from prying eyes, your computer will also be more secure as the limited privledge Guest account will not allow the inadvertant installation of any malware by others.
Good luck.

Beware: If he spends any effort trying to figure out what the problem is, he may actually do damage. For instance, if you disconnect the monitor, he may keep rebooting the machine and shutting it down by pulling the power because he "sees no lights".
Why not set the machine up so it asks for a username and password?

In the Control Panel > User Accounts, password protect your own User account. Do not forget this password!
Then, log out when your finished using the PC.
He won't be able to get Windows started.

Why don't you create a password for your computer instead? That way he'll only be able to switch the computer on and off. :P
