Is your personality guaranteed to be somewhat like your parents? Or is it because you sort of pick it up as you grow? "You're just like your Uncle Tim, or Aunt Becky".... do genes affect your personality?

I think we are very much affected by our parents' personalities and yes, I have a little bit of each of them. There are some things I didn't like, especially with my mother and I have to be conscious about what I am doing not to do this. I make an effort not to repeat what I don't like.

To a large extent, yes, though environment and self play an improtant role too.

Why?

My Dad was a left-hander who had to swithch to using right hand to write after a major fall. My brother and I are both natural left-handers and no matter how my mum tried to change our hand preference, it just won't work so she gave up eventually. I think it's part of our genes. Anyway, my Dad's siblings (1 sister and brother) are left-handers too so we have a heredity running in the family.

As for personality, my parents are very kind and nice people. Since young, I've seen them helping many poor people of various nationalities such that I've also developed a compassion to want to help others.

But I've also learnt to make sure I don't pick up all their traits, especially on thembeing too gullible and trusting due to thembeing kind people. I've seen some nasty people cheating their money by feigning acts and really feel for them. I'm also very different in terms of the type of education I've received from formal institutions.

parents are a big influence in your life, but not a reflection! We all have a moral compass! my Mom was a horrible parent! white trash queen! Socioeconomic status was bad! I am nothing like her!

Sons tend to take on characteristics of their mothers, while daughters take on characteristics of their fathers.
