"A Feather on the Breath of God" by Sigrid Nunez.
She is an amazing writer, she teaches Creative Writing at Columbia University. Her characters are so alive, in all my years of reading, this has to be my ultimate favorite.
Coming up close is "The Girl in Times Square" by Paullina Simons. Amazing, great, fun read.

My all time favorite book is called "Roman by Polanski" it's Roman Polanski's autobiography. The book is almost as thick as Gone with the Wind, but it was so interesting that I never put it down until i was finished with it.
