My Macbook hard drive is shot, and it is no longer capable of recognizing any intrernal hard drive.

Rather than shell out for a new Macbook, I'm thinking of getting a Mini, but cheapskate that I am, I don't want to have to buy a seperate monitor. Can I use the Macbook solely as a monitor hooked up to a Mini?

ELF- it isn't just a matter of installing a new hard drive; I've tried that. The Macbook is not capable of reading any drive, not just the original drive. But thanks.

I guess no. Because your Macbook definitely has no monitor-input. It would somehow work if you had a video input and a running system on your Macbook, but since the 2nd one is not the case it doesn't work.
Theoretically you can screw your Macbook apart (now you have nothing more to lose ;) ) disconnect the display from the motherboard and try to connect it the monitor cable plus fix the power supply (because you surely don't want your hole Macbook running only to supply the monitor with power). To do this you should be a real hardware specialist.

"My Macbook hard drive is shot" - Any compatible hard drive from any manufacturer can easily be installed in your Macbook. And they are very affordable. Then, re-install OS X and "you're good to go".

If I were you, I'd get the MacBook repaired. It's much cheaper than buying a Mac Mini.

That said, no, you can't connect the Mini to the MacBook screen. The VGA port on the MacBook sends, but can't receive, video input.
