I can understand one star, it simply means the asker thinks it is the best answer, but doesn't agree with it.

I can understand four and five stars, but two and three? That is kind of an insult to the answerer. To me it says, "Hey, your answer is the best answer here, but none of them are good". Come to think of it, it insults every answerer of the question.

I would send a question to voting before I would give the answerer three stars, because that would mean none of the answers really satisfied me.

Could someone please explain this to me?

I always give 5 or 4 stars. I give 5 when the answer is awesome, totally in accordance to what I think and/or exactly what I was expecting to have. I give 4 when it is the best one I had but not exactly my opinion. I tend to grade the intention, too. If I feel honesty and sincerity and the intention to share something in a positive and respectful way, I can give 4 stars. If I don't agree with any of the answers, I might ask again to get more and different answers of just sent it to vote, which is fine for me.

Peace!

You must keep in mind that not everybody thinks of the stars in the exactly same way as you do. Everyone has a slightly different meaning behind those stars.

I, for example, give 5 stars to really great answers, 4 stars to answers that were really good, but perhaps not as awesome as they could have been, 3 stars to answers that are good, but that I feel like are missing something or I don't completely agree with them. 2 stars means the answer was ok, but not that good. 1 star means that the answer was really crappy, but the other answers were even crappier.

I usually give 3, 4 or 5 stars.

I always want to choose the best answer myself. I think it's rude to ask a question and then not take a moment to read all the answers and award the best one personally. I'd use the "no best answer" option rather than 1 or 2 stars if I could, but that option is no longer available (last time I checked at least).

I also suspect that some people simply don't care about the stars and just randomly choose something when they are choosing the best answer.

Don't take it so personally. Your answers can't possibly all be perfect. 3 stars is not an insult. The person appreciates your answer, but it perhaps doesn't provide as much information as the asker was hoping for.
