London isn't in a county. Its various suburbs are now controlled by unitary authorities -- councils which have the responsibilities of both district and county councils.
The ancient county of Middlesex (which was totally occupied by whichever parts of London did not overflow into Kent, Essex, Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire or Surrey) was abolished in 1974 when the metropolitan counties (e.g. Greater London, West Midlands, Merseyside &c.) were created.
The Greater London Council was eventually abolished; its powers were devolved to district councils, which became the prototypes for the Unitary Authorities which were introduced in 1996.
As a matter of fact, many former capital cities of counties are now controlled by unitary authorities; so, for instance, Leicester is not actually part of Leicestershire anymore!

London is not in a county, neither is it a county as such, it doesn't fit quite the same rules as other counties as the UK.
London is basically broken down into two; Inner London in the middle and Greater London around the outside. Greater London encompasses areas that are also included in other counties. For example, Sutton, which is a London Borough and in Greater London, but it is also classed as being in Surrey.
Inner London and Greater London are divided into boroughs, which are the smaller areas that would be roughly like a town or village in any other county.
There is also the City of London within the boundaries of London.
I hope this makes some sort of sense!

London used to have its own county and was called the County of London. However after 1965 this county was replaced with Greater London. London is therefore in Greater London.

London, the capital of England, is not in any county. It is an area in its own right that has the status of a county. Counties are split into towns and villages but London is split into Burroughs.

London is a county all of its own.
Now surrounded by counties that used to meet in the middle of London.
All those counties still exist except Middlesex which has disapeared completely since 1974.
There is no such place as Middlesex now.
