Germany began invading countries nearby under the rule of Adolph Hitler -- and threatening others in the region --- England aligned with the affected countries battling these actions and America opted (at first) to stay out of the fray --choosing to stand back and supply England and her allies with materials that they needed --- Germany began attacking the ships that were supplying England --- and that is the one central "thing" that brought America TO the war !!!

It started on September 1, 1939, around 06.40.
The German training battleship Schlesvig-Holstein opened fire on a Polish transit centre on the Westerplatte peninsula in the "Free City" of Gdansk (aka Danzig)
The nazis had the battleship (4 guns of 280 mm/ 11 inch, 12 guns of 150 mm/ 6 inch), it's sister ship the Shleissen, 6 destroyers, 12 mine sweepers, some 8 thousand men armed with 30 field guns, bombers, etc.
The defenders had 128 men and one 75 mm/ 3 inch cannon.

They held on for 7 days.

That victory cost the nazis over 2 thousand dead and wounded.
