This is a very broad question because each baby is very different. Many premature infants have long hospital stays and many many complications from early delivery. Some of these include brain damage, lung damage, eye problems (retinas to be specific), and intestinal problems mainly necrotizing intestial issues (dead bowel because they don't eat and their circulation is poor). I am not trying to scare you but this is the reality of premature infants. Miracles do happen but more often then not the road these little guys have to go down to get better is very hard for them. Don't expect to take the child home until at least your real "due" date or after. Please ask many questions of the neonatalogist (baby's doctor in ICU). Try to make informed decisions about the healthcare of the infant. It is hard and everyone wants the baby to be fine and well but the reality of micropremies as they are called is they will have a difficult time. I don't think many people think about quality of life sometimes in all this. I think they just want their baby to come home and they don't realize they might have to take them home with a tracheostomy, feeding tubes, or many other contraptions to keep it alive. Attached to things your whole life isn't living. I am asking that you make informed healthcare decisions and quality decisions for the baby. Sorry if I was being harsh I am just speaking very to the point because I think people need to know.

If the baby is at least 27weeks far along it has a good chance of survival. Anything earlier than that would be hard. That's still really too early. Babies born that early can end up developing long term problems. My brother was an exception he was born at 27weeks and is now an healthy adult in the air force about to have a baby of his own. Don't rush it, and if there are complications and you have to have the baby then best of luck.

like other people have said it depends on the baby itself. some babies are born as early as 24 weeks and have no complications later inlife and other babies who are born so early are just too weak and too little to survive this early. im speaking from experience my little boy was born premature at 26 weeks, and unfortunatley he only lived for barely7 hours. because he was so early he had so many complications with his lungs being so immature and necrotising of the bowels which is a common infection that preterm babies can get.
its a hard thing to say if a baby would be okay being born so early.

I have 2 friends, 1 went into prem labour at 27wks and altho it was touch and go for quite a while she is now 12 with no long term problems, my other friend had to have an emegency c section at 24wks due to pre-eclampsia, they really didnt think she was going to make it, after finding one problem there was always another, i think she was about 1lb 5oz,very tiny, she is now 9, with no long term health problems. These are the success stories, but im sure there are many that dont make it.
The longer the baby is kept in the womb the better there survival. xx

Doubt it.....
No dont think so just looked up my pregnancy book n they say would have 2 be at least 6 months:

" 24 wks
her vital organs are now mature bt her lungs aren't raedy to cope with independent breathing, so if u went in to labour now the baby would need special care"

"Any baby that is born after 24 wk are considered VIABLE because it has a chance of surviving"

I dont think there are any guarantees but my friends baby was born less that 5 months early and weighed less than 2lbs and he was fine. He was in hospital for a few months and took a while to catch up to others his age but he is now 3 and you would never know.

I think it would be touch and go. Modern medicine is however making progress all the time at keeping babies alive earlier and earlier, but there would probably be long term health implications for a baby born this early if it did survive.

medically they say anything under 24weeks is not viable, i have heard of babys being born prem at 21weeks & surviving but having brain damage etc.
At 5mnths you are only just 20weeks so I would say no it would not be ok and would still be classed as a miscarriage not a stillbirth if it did happen.

Babies are amazingly strong - I think they are eminently viable from around 24 weeks, so should stand a good chance.
