It's the opposite, actually! Scientists are now formulating a theory that takes the cloud cover into account, which would indicate that the runaway greenhouse effect only took place two billion years ago. This gave Venus the two billion years before that a more Earth-like climate - it'd be hotter, due to its proximity to the sun, but they believe it had liquid water and even life! If so, it'd have the level of life that Earth had two billion years ago, so we're not talking ancient civilisations, but it's extremely interesting nonetheless.

There is a possibility that Venus looked like the earth and life existed there. But due to a run a way green house gas, Venus became shrouded in the thick cloud seen today and life died out.

Venus is nothing like a young Earth, it's completely devoid of any liquid at its surface - except molten lava. Earth has had liquid for almost is entire history. Venus is in fact more like what Earth will become in a billion years or two, when the sun begins to increase in brightness and temperature.

No, not really though. It's atmosphere basically contains large amounts of SO2, CO2 and other acidic gases. It acts as a greenhouse gases, making the planet much hotter than earth. It's also much closer to the sun. So if you want a quick tan with your skin burning, this is the planet to go to.

Venus is closer to the sun then the earth and the sun is also very very slowly expanding. Venus can only get hotter. Come to think of it Earth, Mars etc can only get hotter too.
