Yes ,we tried to buy a terrace house in bad state of repair and it was on sale with 2 agents, the one we were dealing with kept coming back to us saying another person had put a higher bid through the other agents and we accepted it for a while. Eventually we asked a friend to go in asking if there was any interest on the property and they replied none so we called the vendors bluff and put in a final offer and said that or nothing. It was lower than we'd been pushed to and was accepted. suspicious eh!
If you feel you are being pushed there is an ombudsman for estate agents now and I would get asking questions. Good luck.

You can be scammed like that. People plant bidders to jack up the price. They talk to bidders and find out how high they willing to go and get out of the bidding just short of your highest offer. Careful who you talk to at auctions you may be talking to a scam artist.

I'm sure it used to go on - but stricter codes are imposed now.
Easy answer is to decide on your offer and stand your ground - don't get involved in a bidding war! You might lose the house, but at least you haven't been scammed - and if they are messing around, they are left without a sale anyhow. Good luck.

Tell me about it!, iwould trust an estate agent as far as i can spit. My friend recently sold his late father's home. It was vacant poss. He established from the buyers that the agent told them that as it was taking longer than the vendor thought he put the price up!. There are so many stories we could be here all day. HOWEVER, JUST REMEMBER THIS.
You never se an old Estate Agent, why? it goes to proove that you can die early of shame!

It's a typical scam and I'm sure if there are any estate agents on Y!A, they'll deny it completely. Complain to the estate agency ombudsman if you feel they are doing this.

It is highly unethical, and illegal in some states.. You can demand to see escrow or other documents, or contact your state's board of realtors to see if there have been complaints lodged against the agent before.
