Hey Guys! I desperately need help! My chemistry teacher wants me to make a temperature scale based on the boiling points and freezing points of ethyl alcohol. He wants 0 degrees to be the freezing point and 100 degrees to be the boiling point of ethyl alcohol. I have to put the freezing point of water and the boiling point of water on that scale. Can anyone help me please? The bp of ethyl alcohol is 78centigrade and fp is -115centigrade. Then i also have to make a formula to convert from celsius scale to the ethyl alcohol scale PLEASE HELP (T.T)

I think the guy above gives enough information to show where this comes from:

To find a temperature, y, in "degrees E", given a temperature, x, in degrees C,

y = (100E/193C)x + (11500/193)E

For example, given 78C

y = (7800/193)E + (11500/193)E

y = 100E

Plug in the values x =0C and x = 100C to see the freezing and boiling points of water in degrees E.

Ok! 0 degrees will be freezing so that is going to be the freezing point. (i.e. 0 degrees = -115 C)

100 degrees will be boiling so that will be the boiling point (i.e. 100 degrees = 78C)

all you have to do is compare the differences 100-0=100 and 78- -115=193. so the ratio is 100 degree difference is equal to 193C difference

then you can just mark out 10 even sections (10 sections between marks 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 ,90, 100)

so to convert our scale we should probably just use marks of 10 degrees (0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 ,90, 100, etc.) divide the mark by 100 degrees and multiply by 193C (ex: 10degrees /100 degrees *193C = 19.3C the degrees cancel and you are left with units of C)

this will work with any mark (mark 11 degrees/100*193 =21.23C)

formula: the # on your scale * (100 degrees / 193C)
