This list of exceptional universities with online programs grows every month.

What's your impression of the likes of:
Harvard University, UMass, Stanford University, Duke University, UC-Berkeley, Berklee (music), Florida State, UNC, Boston University, Johns Hopkins University, .... and probably University of YourState -- all offer degree programs online. As do 100s more of fine reputation.

Fact is, there are colleges at all levels online and in the classroom. Some traditional schools stink too, that's why we have the USNWR rankings.

Three things I know:
1) online classes at a good college are harder than the same class in-the-seat
2) the value of the degree is directly proportional to the reputation of the college (not whether online vs traditional)
3) it's growing very very fast and is still evolving

Yes, some colleges seem really shady and flood your inbox with emails, and will admit anyone, promising a degree fast. Obviously, these aren't good schools. On the other hand, online education is moving forward in leaps and bounds, and many well established schools now offer online degree programs, places like the University of Washington, Boston University, and SUNY Empire State. When exploring online schools, think of how they market themselves- are they making lots of promises and calling you constantly? Do they offer instant admission over the phone? If so, don't attend! Look for a school with standards and a good reputation, and try to find a place that has been around for a while and also has a physical campus.

There are a lot of On-Line colleges that do really suck and they are not recognized by the National Association of Higher Education. This means that your degree will be practically useless. If the college says it is "nationally accredited" it really does not mean much. In order to find one that IS good, look for REAL Universities or Colleges that actually have an on-site physical campus, that offer courses on line. They MUST be both nationally, and regionally accredited. Another good indicator of one that is good is if the Department of Workforce Development supports and recognizes them.
If they say "get your Bachelors degree in 6 months to a year" run away as fast as you can!!! Because that is BS, and I am NOT talking Bachelors of Science!!!
So three reasons?
1. Most are not going to give you anything but an emptier wallet.
2. Who knows who the cheaters are in them?
3. Any "Non-accredited" degree can be more useful as toilet paper than hanging on a wall in a frame.

1) EXPENSIVE 2) Debt after graduating 3) Waste of money when half students never graduate. Even graduates have difficulty finding a job despite having a degree.
