To be qualified to get into the top schools, you need:

1. A high GPA. GPA is not as important as it is for academic programs -- but is still important. A 3.5 from a good school is enough.

2. A high GMAT score. Over 700 is good enough. Under 600 would be bad. American MBA programs do not use the CAT.

3. Work experience. The top schools want three to five years of work experience -- leaning more towards five years. If you have really unusual work (like working overseas), then they may let you in with less experience.

Good recommendations, the quality of your undergraduate institution, and your outside interests have an effect.

The two other things that are critical are your essays and your interview. Lots of qualified students get turned down -- so these are often the determining factors in getting in.
