I've heard that in Guam, where there is a serious problem with brown tree snakes, dogs have been trained to sniff for snakes before cargo gets to leave the country on planes. The dogs typically appear to be fox or Jack Russell terriers. The dogs find the snakes and kill them. I know that there are a lot of venomous snakes in Australia and these snakes are mildly poisonous. They also are native to Australia and were brought to this island by accident on ships.

We have guinea fowl birds that are supposed to keep snakes away or at bay.
These birds are similar to peacocks, but not as noisy and not as big.
We have 4 of them and the roam around together and sleep up high in one of our gum trees.
I have actually seen them gang up on a brown snake and attack it until the snake went away. Apparently the noise of the guinea fowl also keeps the snakes away. In the 4 years that I have lived hear in Victoria, I have only seen 2 snakes, and yet the neighbours have had heaps more. Either we are really lucky or the guinea fowls do the trick, and we have lots of poultry here so eggs are all around for snakes to eat.
By the by, our guinea fowl free range about the house.

I dont think you guys have them over there but mongoose would be ideal or anything in the weasel family really would work out just fine. Snakes and weasel type critters dont get along at all :-) Snakes dont like dogs either. Only thing there is, depending on the species of snake, you could wind up losing your dog :-( Weasels however very rarely get themselves bitten.
