Buying used it the best way. Craigslist, autotrader, cars.com, ebay, and the PCA classifieds.
That being said, I would look at the previous gen 911s (996) also. Depending on your budget, you could either save money and get a very nice 911, or spend a bit more and get a 911 turbo (~60k).

As a generalization, dealer pricing will always be a premium price compared to private sellers. However, if you wind up looking at new Caymans, you may find a moment where dealers have started to stock new model year cars, but still have a few of the previous model year in stock - the dealer will normally be anxious to get rid of these and will often price them competitively with used cars.
But if you are looking used, you best bet is simply to shop around. The other thing to consider is what options you are looking for; such as, if you are caught between a Cayman or Cayman S... in short, this (or any other option) will be much less expensive in your initial purchase than to add or upgrade later.
Ultimately, the best thing you can do is simply take your time... prices are not going to go up, so be willing to be picky and get what you really want, even if it means looking for awhile longer.

if you want to buy new, go to the dealer, and check for last model year's cars. Dealers will want to move them quickly.
For used cars, check any of the Porsche magazines at Barnes & Noble, or check the PCA classifieds, as well as looking at eBay.
I'd personally suggest trying to find an older 911, something like a 993, which would be much more car for the money, especially if you can find a Turbo for a good price. It will also likely increase in value considerably.

I assume you want a used car. Try the new leasing websites for trading cars. A friend just got a great deal on a BMW 335 via swapalease.com
